Abstract
The program aimed to facilitate the rehabilitation of individuals with physical disabilities in developing countries. The program was implemented by the Sociedade Internacional de Prótese e Órtese (ISPO) in collaboration with the USAID. The program provided financial assistance to 113 professionals in the field of prosthetics and orthotics, categorized into two groups: Category I, comprising 35 professionals, and Category II, comprising 78 professionals. The program included two components: tuition fees and living expenses, which included accommodation, stipend, residence permit, and health insurance. Two types of scholarships were offered: a full ISPO scholarship, which included both components, and a partial ISPO scholarship, where the ISPO provided tuition fees, and another entity or partner shared the costs of living expenses. The program required a commitment from the recipient to return to their country or region and work for at least three years after graduation. The program was implemented through a partnership with 11 educational institutions in developing countries, including the Cambodian School of Prosthetics and Orthotics, the Pakistan Institute of Prosthetics and Orthotics Science, and the University of Don Bosco in El Salvador. The institutions were responsible for selecting candidates and submitting their applications to the ISPO. The application process required candidates to submit a comprehensive application package, including a curriculum vitae, academic documents, and letters of recommendation. The ISPO reviewed the applications and made recommendations to the USAID-ISPO Committee, which made the final decisions on scholarship awards. The program required regular monitoring of scholarship recipients, with the educational institutions submitting reports on the students' performance, progress, and behavior at the end of each semester. The program also required the submission of receipts for travel expenses to verify the sharing of costs, which was a condition of the program. The program's objective was to improve the rehabilitation of individuals with physical disabilities in developing countries by providing financial assistance to professionals in the field of prosthetics and orthotics. The program's success was measured by the number of scholarship recipients, the quality of their education, and their commitment to returning to their countries and working in the field of prosthetics and orthotics.
