Abstract
The municipality covers an area of 13,649 hectares and has a population of 9,313 people, according to the 2018 census. The main economic activities in the area are agriculture and livestock. The municipality is characterized by a diverse range of ecosystems, including agroecosystems, arbustal, bosque, herbazal, páramo, and río. The 50% of the area is composed of agroecosystems, while 14% is páramo, and only 6% is bosque. The municipality has a total of 32% of its area in a natural state, while 68% is transformed. The municipality has a rich biodiversity, with a total of 990 species, including 285 species of birds and 28 species of endangered species. However, the areas of highest biodiversity are concentrated in the center of the municipality, which is also where the highest levels of deforestation are found. The deforestation in the municipality has been a concern for the past 30 years, with the highest levels of deforestation occurring between 1990 and 2000. The areas of highest deforestation are concentrated in the eastern part of the municipality, where there are still areas of forest remaining. The deforestation has had a significant impact on the ecosystems, with 84% of the bosque fragmentado, 81% of the herbazal, and 72% of the arbustal being found in areas of high deforestation. The municipality is also vulnerable to climate change, with a projected decrease in precipitation of up to 39% by the year 2100. This will have a significant impact on the water resources in the area, with the department of Cesar being susceptible to water scarcity due to a deficit in natural water resources, reduction in precipitation, or insufficiency in water infrastructure. The municipality has a number of protected areas, including the Reserva Forestal, which covers 9,495 hectares, and the Parques Naturales Regionales, which cover 2,334 hectares. However, the municipality is also home to a number of mining and hydrocarbon exploration activities, which pose a threat to the conservation of the biodiversity in the area. Overall, Manaure Balcón del Cesar is a municipality with a rich biodiversity and a number of ecosystems that are vulnerable to deforestation and climate change. The municipality requires a comprehensive conservation plan to protect its natural resources and ensure the long-term sustainability of its ecosystems.
