Abstract
The program is part of the USAID's MOMENTUM suite of awards and is implemented by IMA World Health with partners JSI Research & Training Institute, Inc., Pathfinder International, Cooperative for Assistance and Relief Everywhere, Inc., GOAL USA Fund, and the Africa Christian Health Associations Platform. The program's goal in Sudan is to increase the capacity of Sudanese institutions to plan sustainably and manage and maintain quality MNH and WASH services. To achieve this goal, MIHR works with key stakeholders to implement three intermediate results: IR1, IR2, and IR3. IR1 aims to improve access to and use of evidence-based, quality MNH and WASH services, while IR2 focuses on strengthening the capacity of host country institutions at locality and state level to deliver quality MNH and WASH services. IR3 involves adaptive learning and use of evidence in MNH and WASH programming. In early Q3, violence erupted in Khartoum between the Sudan Armed Forces (SAF) and the Rapid Support Forces (RSF), a paramilitary group that had agreed to share Sudan's governance with the SAF and a civilian coalition in August 2019. The violence soon spread across the country and has been especially fierce in the five states comprising the Darfur region and North Kordofan state. Combatants have repeatedly violated ceasefire agreements negotiated by the international community and agreements to maintain humanitarian corridors for delivering life-saving assistance. The conflict has severely impacted telecommunications, electricity, water, banking, and other essential services across the country, making it difficult for people to meet their basic needs. Despite these challenges, MIHR continues to implement its program, focusing on the delivery of quality MNH and WASH services to underserved populations. The program's efforts are concentrated in the states of South Kordofan, North Kordofan, and the Darfur region. MIHR's programming in Sudan includes the strengthening of health systems, the improvement of MNH services, and the enhancement of WASH service delivery. The program works with local health authorities, community health workers, and other stakeholders to implement its activities. MIHR also collaborates with other multi-sectoral partners to build resilience and ensures the measurement, dissemination, and use of evidence-based practices. In terms of implementation progress, MIHR has made significant strides in improving access to and use of evidence-based, quality MNH and WASH services. The program has also strengthened the capacity of host country institutions at locality and state level to deliver quality MNH and WASH services. Additionally, MIHR has implemented adaptive learning and use of evidence in MNH and WASH programming, which has contributed to the improvement of health and non-health-related outcomes. The program's performance monitoring plan is designed to track progress against its intermediate results and overall goal. The plan includes indicators such as the number of health facilities upgraded for EmONC, the number of community health workers trained, and the number of households with improved WASH services. MIHR's management team regularly reviews the program's progress and makes adjustments as needed to ensure that the program remains on track to achieve its objectives. In the next quarter, MIHR plans to continue its implementation of the program, focusing on the delivery of quality MNH and WASH services to underserved populations. The program will also continue to work with local health authorities, community health workers, and other stakeholders to strengthen health systems and improve MNH services. Additionally, MIHR will continue to collaborate with other multi-sectoral partners to build resilience and ensure the measurement, dissemination, and use of evidence-based practices.
