Abstract
The agricultural development initiative in Rwanda, for instance, utilized mobile data solutions to improve crop yields and increase household income among program participants. Similarly, mobile data solutions can be applied in various contexts, including surveys, monitoring, and data collection. However, the suitability of mobile data solutions depends on several factors, including the type of data to be collected, the process of data collection, and the analysis needs. Mobile data solutions may be appropriate for surveys with complex skip patterns, longitudinal assessments, and ongoing monitoring, but may not be suitable for long, one-off surveys or collecting large amounts of qualitative data. When assessing the readiness of a project or field site for mobile data solutions, several parameters need to be considered. These include infrastructure, such as mobile network connectivity, data transmission options, and power supply for recharging mobile devices. Additionally, data acquisition parameters, such as the type of data to be collected, the number of enumerators, and the use of sensors or other instrumentation, need to be evaluated. The parameters to consider for data collection include the type of data to be collected, the process of data collection, and the analysis needs. These parameters include data, process, duration, analysis, data sharing, and data preservation. Mobile data solutions provide an advantage over paper and pen when a real-time dashboard is desired, but require additional resources to configure or customize the dashboard. In terms of infrastructure, mobile network connectivity is essential for successful implementation of mobile data solutions. The type and quality of connectivity, as well as the reliability of the service, need to be evaluated. Additionally, the availability of power supply for recharging mobile devices and the option to upload data via alternative means, such as WiFi or cable, need to be considered. The readiness assessment for mobile data solutions involves evaluating the project's or field site's infrastructure, data acquisition parameters, and the suitability of mobile data solutions for the specific context. This assessment will help determine the viability of mobile data solutions and select the appropriate system for the setting.
