Abstract
The existing school building had a single, dilapidated classroom with a leaking roof that posed a safety risk to students. The school lacked sufficient furniture, resulting in overcrowding and demotivation among students. The situation changed when USAID|NEXOS announced a project to improve the school's infrastructure. The community, led by Professor Aracely Ramírez, came together to organize and work towards the project's success. The community formed different work committees, with the support of the local municipality and the education program, to tackle the challenge of building a new school. The community's efforts paid off, and the new school is now one of the best in the area, boasting excellent physical conditions, including a remodeled and equipped technology classroom, a new sanitary module, a water storage and distribution system, and a perimeter fence. The project has contributed to improving the quality of education in the municipality by providing a better learning environment for students. The new school has had a positive impact on the community, with the Secretariat of Education agreeing to open three additional grades (seventh, eighth, and ninth) to benefit the community and surrounding villages. Additionally, teachers have begun offering a voluntary adult literacy program called "Maestro en Casa" on weekends.
