Abstract
The initiative aims to promote the ability to read, particularly in the target States of Bauchi and Sokoto. The Let's Read! Pupil's Book for Primary 2 is one of the materials developed to support this initiative. The Let's Read! Pupil's Book is based on the National English Studies Curriculum, which emphasizes the development of reading skills in pupils. The curriculum focuses on six key areas: phonemic awareness, phonics, vocabulary acquisition/grammar, fluency, comprehension, and concept of print. The materials provide opportunities for pupils to apply what is taught and demonstrate the skills learned. Daily and weekly review of lessons is also encouraged to reinforce learning. The early grade reading materials are designed to stimulate reading proficiency and cultivate positive reading habits in children. The materials offer frequent practice in reading, which is expected to lead to improved reading skills. The initiative is supported by the United States Agency for International Development (USAID) through the Northern Education Initiative Plus program. The success of the Let's Read! program relies heavily on the support of teachers, parents, and other stakeholders. Teachers are expected to deliver systematic and explicit reading instruction, while parents and family members are encouraged to support pupils at home. The initiative aims to improve the capacity of teachers to deliver effective reading instruction in the early grades. The Deputy Governor/Hon. Commissioner of the State Ministry of Education expressed appreciation for the initiative and commitment to support its implementation. The state has made a commitment to work closely with NEI+ to develop high-quality reading books and implement the Let's Read! program in all primary schools. The program is based on global best practices and incorporates expert advice from state and national education English experts. The Let's Read! Pupil's Book is designed to be used every day to help pupils learn in schools. The materials are written with the expectation that everyone will play their role in ensuring pupils learn to read in the early grades. The initiative aims to strengthen the foundation of the education system and provide a positive future for pupils, communities, states, and the nation.
