Abstract
The guide is made possible by the support of the American people through the United States Agency for International Development (USAID) under the Northern Education Initiative Plus program. The guide is licensed under the Creative Commons Attribution 4.0 International License, allowing users to copy, distribute, transmit, and adapt the work as long as they attribute or credit the original author or illustrator. The guide is designed to promote the ability to read among Nigerian children, particularly in the target States of Bauchi and Sokoto. The early grade reading materials are based on the National English Studies Curriculum, which emphasizes the development of reading skills in pupils, including phonemic awareness, phonics, vocabulary acquisition, fluency, comprehension, and concept of print. Opportunities are provided for pupils to apply what is taught and demonstrate the skills learnt. The guide is structured to provide daily and weekly review of lessons, as well as frequent practice in reading to stimulate reading proficiency and cultivate positive reading habits in children. The materials are written with the expectation that teachers will use them every day to help pupils learn in schools. Teachers are encouraged to ensure that pupils take their books home every day for reading and writing practice, and that parents or guardians help pupils at home with their reading and writing practice. The guide is the result of collaboration between the Nigerian Educational Research and Development Council (NERDC) and the USAID-funded Northern Education Initiative Plus. A large group of educators and experts contributed to the development of the guide, including Professor Ismail Junaidu, the Executive Secretary of NERDC, and Nafisa Ado from USAID. The guide is based on global best practices and incorporates the expert advice of many state and national education English experts. The guide is divided into 10 weeks, with each week covering a specific topic and set of lessons. The lessons are designed to be implemented in a specific order, with each lesson building on the previous one. The guide includes a list of contributors, acknowledgments, and a foreword by Professor Ismail Junaidu, the Executive Secretary of NERDC. The guide is an important resource for primary teachers in Nigeria, providing them with the tools and support they need to deliver effective reading instruction to their pupils. The guide is written with the expectation that teachers will use it every day to help pupils learn to read, and that parents or guardians will support pupils at home with their reading and writing practice.
