Abstract
Pupil's Book for Primary 3, Term Three, is an early grade reading material designed for primary teachers and pupils in Nigeria. The book is made possible by the support of the American people through the United States Agency for International Development (USAID) under the Northern Education Initiative Plus program. The book is based on the National English Studies Curriculum, which emphasizes the development of reading skills in pupils, including phonemic awareness, phonics, vocabulary acquisition/grammar, fluency, comprehension, and concept of print. The materials provide opportunities for pupils to apply what is taught and demonstrate the skills learnt, as well as daily and weekly review of lessons. The early grade reading materials offer pupils frequent practice in reading, which is expected to stimulate reading proficiency and cultivate positive reading habits in children. The book is designed to be used in conjunction with the Teacher's Guide, which provides support for teachers to deliver effective reading instruction. The Let's Read! programme is based on global best practices and incorporates the expert advice of many state and national education English experts. The programme aims to improve the capacity of teachers to deliver effective reading instruction in the early grades, particularly in the target States of Bauchi and Sokoto. The Deputy Governor of Bauchi State, His Excellency, Eng. Nuhu Gidado, expressed his support for the programme, stating that education is the key to every success in life and that reading is essential for learning and being successful in school. He emphasized the importance of teachers, parents, and other family members in supporting pupils to learn to read and encouraged all stakeholders to play their part in strengthening the foundation of the education system. The programme has been developed by a large group of educators and experts under the leadership of the Nigerian Educational Research and Development Council (NERDC) and the USAID-funded Northern Education Initiative Plus. The contributors to the programme include experts from various institutions, including the Federal Ministry of Education, the Nigerian Educational Research and Development Council, and the Northern Education Initiative Plus.
