Abstract
The initiative aims to promote the ability to read, particularly in the target states of Bauchi and Sokoto. The Let's Read! Pupil's Book for Primary 3, Term 2, is one of the materials developed to support this initiative. The book is based on the National English Studies Curriculum, which emphasizes the development of reading skills in pupils, including phonemic awareness, phonics, vocabulary acquisition, fluency, comprehension, and concept of print. The materials provide opportunities for pupils to apply what is taught and demonstrate the skills learned. Daily and weekly review of lessons is also facilitated through the materials. The early grade reading materials are designed to stimulate reading proficiency and cultivate positive reading habits in children. The materials offer frequent practice in reading, which is expected to lead to improved reading skills. The initiative is supported by the United States Agency for International Development (USAID) under the Northern Education Initiative Plus program. The success of the Let's Read! program depends on the commitment of teachers, parents, and other stakeholders. Teachers are expected to use the materials every day to help pupils learn, while parents are encouraged to support their children's reading and writing practice at home. The initiative also emphasizes the importance of regular attendance and punctuality in school. The Deputy Governor of Bauchi State, His Excellency, Eng. Nuhu Gidado, expressed his support for the initiative, stating that education is the key to every success in life. He emphasized the urgent need to improve the capacity of teachers to deliver effective reading instruction in the early grades. The state has committed to work closely with Northern Education Initiative Plus to develop high-quality reading books and implement the Let's Read! program in all primary schools. The Let's Read! Pupil's Book for Primary 3, Term 2, is a valuable resource for teachers and pupils in Nigeria. The book provides a comprehensive and engaging approach to reading instruction, which is essential for the development of reading skills in pupils. The initiative has the potential to make a significant impact on the education system in Nigeria, particularly in the target states of Bauchi and Sokoto.
