Abstract
The program aims to improve the quality of education in Liberia, particularly for primary school students. The program is part of the USAID/Liberia ABE: ACCESS ID Contract AID-OAA-I-14-00071/AID-669-TO-17-00001. The program includes a Level 1 Placement Assessment, which is a tool used to evaluate students' reading skills. The assessment consists of three parts: letter recognition, number recognition, and reading comprehension. The letter recognition section presents a list of 20 letters, and the student is asked to identify each letter. The number recognition section presents a list of 20 numbers, and the student is asked to identify each number. The reading comprehension section presents a short story about a girl named Massa who is cooking a meal. The story is written at a Grade 1 level and includes vocabulary and sentence structures that are typical of early elementary school students. The story is designed to assess the student's ability to understand and interpret written text. The assessment is designed to be administered by a trained assessor who will guide the student through the test. The assessor will ask the student to read the story and then answer several comprehension questions. The questions are designed to assess the student's ability to understand the main idea of the story, identify characters and events, and make inferences based on the text. The assessment is scored based on the number of correct answers. The letter recognition section is scored out of 20, the number recognition section is scored out of 20, and the reading comprehension section is scored out of 51. The total score is the sum of the scores from each section. The Level 1 Placement Assessment is an important tool for educators and policymakers in Liberia who are working to improve the quality of education in the country. The assessment provides valuable information about students' reading skills and can be used to identify areas where students need additional support. By using this assessment, educators and policymakers can develop targeted interventions to help students improve their reading skills and improve educational outcomes in Liberia.
