Abstract
The project aimed to address violent extremism in the Sahel region by promoting peace and community resilience. The manual is designed to provide training and guidance for young people, community leaders, and other stakeholders on leadership, communication, and conflict transformation. The document is the result of five years of experience in implementing the PDEV II project, specifically the component on improving and reinforcing social communication for peace in the Sahel. The manual is divided into three modules: Leadership, Communication for Leadership, and Conflict Transformation. Each module consists of several units that cover topics such as leadership styles, effective communication, conflict analysis, and transformation techniques. The Leadership module explores the concept of leadership, including the characteristics of a good leader, sources of power, and leadership styles. The Communication for Leadership module focuses on the importance of effective communication in leadership, including communication principles and capacities. The Conflict Transformation module delves into the definition and types of conflicts, attitudes towards conflicts, and the roles of actors in conflicts. It also covers principles and techniques for transforming conflicts. The manual is designed to be a practical guide for trainers, facilitators, and animators working with young people and community leaders. It provides principles and exercises to help users produce expected results. The document acknowledges that it is not complete and perfect, and it may be enriched and modified by users. The PDEV II project was implemented by International Relief and Development (IRD/Blumont) in partnership with Equal Access International, Search for Common Ground, and Salam Institute for Peace and Justice. The project aimed to promote peace and community resilience in the Sahel region by addressing the root causes of violent extremism. The manual was made possible with the support of the United States Agency for International Development (USAID). The content of the manual does not necessarily reflect the views of USAID or the US government. The manual is intended to serve as a resource for practitioners, including trainers, facilitators, and animators working with young people and community leaders. It provides a framework for promoting peace and community resilience in the Sahel region by addressing the root causes of violent extremism.
