Abstract
To achieve this goal, the alliance seeks to help producers in Nigeria master the regulations governing the edible oil, fat spreads (margarine), and blended spreads sector in the country. This manual provides an update on the standards and regulations relating to edible oils, fat spreads (margarine), and blended spreads in Nigeria. The manual focuses on the registration procedures, labeling and packaging requirements, and food safety standards and regulations for edible oils, fat spreads (margarine), and blended spreads in Nigeria. It provides information on the physical registration process, NAFDAC E-registration process, labeling requirements for food in Nigeria, and packaging requirements for oils and fats. The Nigerian "Fats and Oils Regulations, 2019" outlines the scope of application, prohibition, vitamin A fortification, source, additives, impurities, labeling of fats and oils, and labeling, limits, and claims for trans fats. The regulations also cover classification, definition, and specification of fats and oils, offenses and penalties, forfeiture after conviction, revocation, interpretation, citation, and description of shea butter. The manual describes the definition, general characteristics, chemical and physical characteristics, fatty acid composition, and other requirements of shea butter. It also provides information on the description of fat spreads (margarine) and blended spreads, including their definition, general characteristics, and requirements. The Global Shea Alliance is a non-profit industry association with 706 members from 35 countries, including women's groups, brands, and retailers, suppliers, non-profits, and affiliates. The alliance is currently implementing initiatives in quality, promotion, and sustainability, with a focus on promoting the use of shea as an edible oil in West Africa. The manual is part of the alliance's Promotion Program, which aims to understand the regulations governing edible oil, fat spreads (margarine), and blended spreads in Nigeria, Ghana, Côte d'Ivoire, and Guinea. The manual provides information on product registration procedures, labeling and packaging requirements, and food safety standards and regulations for each country. The general objective of the manual is to take stock of the standards and regulations of edible oils, fat spreads (margarine), and blended spreads in four West African countries. The specific objectives are to provide information on product registration procedures, labeling and packaging requirements, and food safety standards and regulations for each country. The manual is intended for the benefit and use of shea butter producers in Nigeria, aiming to improve the quality of production and consumption of shea butter as edible oil, fat spreads (margarine), and blended spreads, and to help protect consumers, as well as benefit from advantages on the export market. The Nigerian "Fats and Oils Regulations, 2019" requires that all edible oils, fat spreads (margarine), and blended spreads be registered with the National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC). The regulations also specify labeling and packaging requirements, including the use of NAFDAC-approved labels and packaging materials. The manual provides information on the standards and regulations for edible oils, fat spreads (margarine), and blended spreads in Nigeria, including the requirements for physical registration, NAFDAC E-registration, labeling, and packaging. It also provides information on food safety standards and regulations, including quality requirements, maximum levels of contaminants, and other requirements. The manual is a valuable resource for shea butter producers in Nigeria, providing them with the information they need to comply with the regulations and improve the quality of their products.
