Abstract
The project's objectives are to track immunization status of children in these districts and monitor immunization trends at the community level. The project duration is from September 2015 to August 2016, with a total obligation funding amount of $50,000. In May 2016, the project made significant progress in both districts. In Ntchisi District, ADC orientations on the REC approach were conducted in all four remaining ADCs, briefing a total of 182 ADC members. In Dowa District, health worker orientations were conducted in remaining health facilities, and ADC orientations were conducted in five TAs, briefing a total of 219 members. A mini survey to verify registration and vaccination of infants was conducted in Dowa District, and an open day was held in TA Chakhadza to address low immunization coverage. However, the project faced some challenges in May 2016. Disbursement of funds was delayed, affecting supervision of MVMH tool and infant registration. Inconsistent clinic schedules by health facilities demotivated mothers, but this issue was addressed during village head orientations. Discussions were held with the Accounts team to harmonize the flow of activities. The project has learned several lessons and best practices. ADC members appreciated their role in identifying eligible infants for vaccinations and tracking households for 100% coverage. The TAS that piloted the REC approach have seen an improvement in immunization uptake, and an initiative to encourage infant registration and tracking will be strengthened. For the next month, June 2016, the project plans to conduct village head and volunteer trainings on infant tracking and use of MVMH tool in the two districts. Supervision of registration of children in the remaining TAs will also be conducted, along with mini-surveys to verify registration and vaccination of infants. Procurement of field supplies will be undertaken, and commemoration of the AVW will be conducted with the support of the District Health Management.
