Abstract
PROJECT PURPOSE IS TO IMPROVE MFM CAPABILITY TO DEVELOP NUTRITION AND FOOD TECHNOLOGY AND SPECIAL TRAINING PROGRAMS STRESSING LOW COST, HIGH NUTRITION FOODS IN LDC"S BASED ON LOCALLY AVAILABLE RESOURCES. SELF-EVALUATION COMPILED FROM TRIP REPORTS AND OTHER MFM INTERNAL DOCUMENTS NOTES THAT MFM PROGRAM CAPABILITY HAS IMPROVED IN 4 AREAS: 1) PROGRAM DEVELOPMENT AND IMPLEMENTATION THROUGH INCREASE IN SIZE AND SKILL LEVELS OF STAFF; 2) FIELD PROJECT DEVELOPMENT IN ADDITIONAL LDC"S; 3) INTERACTION WITH OTHER DEVELOPMENT ORGANIZATIONS AND; 4) ASSESSMENT OF THE DIRECTION OF MFM. IT IS NOTED THAT MFM HAS ALTERED ITS EMPHASIS FROM "IMMEDIATE" TECHNOLOGY WHICH STRESSES THE USE OF THE COOKER/EXTRUDER AS A WAY TO PROVIDE LOW-COST HIGH PROTEIN FOOD TO ONE WHICH IS BROADER IN SCOPE AND DESIGNED TO REACH THE VILLAGE LEVEL MORE EFFECTIVELY WITH SIMPLER FOOD TECHNOLOGY AND THROUGH EFFECTIVE FIELD-ORIENTED NUTRITION PROGRAMS. PROGRESS OF 12 SUB-PROJECTS IS NOTED. MOST SIGNIFICANT ACCOMPLISHEMENTS INCLUDE: 1)TRANSFER OF EXTRUSION TECHNOLOGY TO KOREA; 2)TRAINING OF 53 FOOD TECHNOLOGISTS AND NUTRITIONISTS AT THE INSTITUTE OF PROTEIN FOOD TECHNOLOGY TRAINING SCHOOL; 3)DISTRIBUTION OF A NUTRITION MANUAL TO FIELD NUTRITIONISTS WORLDWIDE; 4)PRODUCTION OF A VILLAGE TEXTURIZER HANDBOOK; 5)IMPLEMENTATION OF APPLIED NUTRITION PROJECTS IN BOLIVIA, ECUADOR, HONDURAS ANDKOREA; 6)TRANSFER OF FOOD TECHNOLOGY IN JAMAICA; 7)REVISED TRAINING CURRICULUM AT MFM; 8)TRANSFER OF AGR SKILLS AND MACHINERY TO KENYA AND ECUADOR. IT IS RECOMMENDED THAT AID PROVIDE SUPPORT TO MFM FOR AN ADDITIONAL 3 TO 4 YEARS. THIS SUPPORT SHOULD INCLUDE FUNDING FOR PROGRAM DEVELOPMENT AND IMPLEMENTATION OF FIELD PROGRAMS THAT IMPROVE FOOD AND NUTRITION IN RURAL VILLAGES AND POOR URBAN COMMUNITIES.
