Abstract
480 Title II feeding and community development program in the pueblos jovenes of Peru"s urban areas. SAWS"s Peruvian counterpart office, the Obra Filantropica Accion Social Adventista (OFASA), will continue to implement and expand this ongoing program. SAWS/OFASA will distribute approximately 30,000 metric tons of Title II commodities to an estimated 133,000 beneficiaries; the distribution will be complemented by a nutritional education program. The program will emphasize the most nutritious use of the Title II foods and locally procured foodstuffs. Health and sanitation instruction will be an essential part of the educational courses. The courses will be given to recipients of the Title II food before it is distributed. The Food for Work community development projects will range from simple street cleaning to the construction of roads, community centers, and child care centers. Special community development projects will also be established. These will consist of potable water and electrification programs, as well as the additional construction of schools and medical posts. Wherever possible, the participating communities will be required to finance at least 50% of the construction and materials costs of these projects. A rotating fund for income generation projects may also be established, with the participants dividing their time between community development activities, vocational training, and the actual income generation work. The laborers enrolled in the program will be the heads of their households, regardless of sex, who are without regular employment. A mobile medical clinic will regularly service prior selected sites within the various pueblos jovenes. The clinic will provide all area residents with family planning services; emergency and basic medical care; a referral service to local medical posts for more serious cases; and will conduct vaccination campaigns in the pueblos jovenes and local schools.
