Abstract
The CPR decreased from 58.8% in 2011 to 53.2% in 2016. The survey also found that the use of modern contraceptive methods among married women aged 15-49 years was 44.8%, with a higher prevalence among women in urban areas (54.1%) compared to rural areas (42.5%). The NDHS 2016 highlighted the importance of increasing access to family planning services, particularly in rural areas. The survey found that 71.1% of married women in rural areas had never used a modern contraceptive method, compared to 44.1% in urban areas. The survey also reported that the main reasons for not using modern contraceptive methods were lack of access to services (44.1%), lack of knowledge about modern contraceptive methods (24.5%), and fear of side effects (14.1%). The Ministry of Health and Population (MOHP) has implemented various initiatives to increase access to family planning services, including the establishment of Primary Health Care Centres (PHC) and Sub Health Posts (SHP) in rural areas. The MOHP has also introduced the Healthy Timing and Spacing of Pregnancy (HTSP) program, which aims to reduce the number of unintended pregnancies and improve maternal and child health outcomes. The NDHS 2016 reported a significant increase in the use of modern contraceptive methods among women in the 20-24 age group, from 34.1% in 2011 to 43.1% in 2016. However, the survey also found that the use of modern contraceptive methods among women in the 15-19 age group decreased from 24.5% in 2011 to 20.5% in 2016. The survey attributed this decline to the increasing number of early marriages and the lack of access to family planning services among young women. The NDHS 2016 recommended that the MOHP should strengthen its family planning program by increasing access to modern contraceptive methods, particularly in rural areas. The survey also recommended that the MOHP should implement targeted interventions to increase the use of modern contraceptive methods among young women and women in rural areas.
