Abstract
It is intended to inform USAID officials, educators in Africa, other donor agencies, and members of the U.S. Congress about the progress of USAID"s development assistance programs in basic education in sub-Saharan Africa; and to serve as a source of factual data on USAID"s 12 programs. Because USAID Missions in 12 countries have programs in basic education, many activities are taking place across the continent. Progress is widespread and continuous. This overview presents a snapshot taken in mid-1995, and is primarily descriptive.
