Abstract
The project aims to increase access to electricity for 60 million people by 2022 and add 30,000 megawatts of new generated power by 2030. Power Africa is comprised of 145 private companies, 18 bilateral and multilateral development partners, and the U.S. Government. The project focuses on accelerating off-grid energy access through household solar home systems (SHSs) and mini-grids. SHSs are a type of off-grid solar energy system that provides electricity to households, while mini-grids are larger-scale systems that provide electricity to multiple households and businesses. Tanzania is one of the focus countries for the Power Africa Off-grid Project. The country has a significant off-grid solar market, with a growing demand for energy access. The report highlights the potential for off-grid solar energy to meet this demand, particularly in rural areas where access to electricity is limited. The report provides a comprehensive overview of the off-grid solar market in Tanzania, including the structure and history of the energy sector, policy and regulatory frameworks, and the role of international donors. The report also highlights the importance of gender mainstreaming in the off-grid solar sector, as women are often the primary users of energy in households. The report draws upon the most up-to-date sales and investment data from the Global Off-Grid Lighting Association (GOGLA) to provide insights into the off-grid solar sector. The report also includes a geospatial analysis that highlights potential areas for off-grid solar energy expansion. The Power Africa Off-grid Project aims to support private off-grid companies and make the markets in sub-Saharan Africa more attractive for investment and operations. The project focuses on accelerating off-grid energy access through targeted, specific interventions with private companies, governments, and donors. The report highlights the potential for off-grid solar energy to meet the growing demand for energy access in Tanzania. The report also emphasizes the importance of policy and regulatory frameworks in supporting the growth of the off-grid solar sector. The Power Africa Off-grid Project has several work streams, including policy and regulatory frameworks, market intelligence, business performance, access to finance, and cross-sectoral integration. The project aims to increase access to electricity for 60 million people by 2022 and add 30,000 megawatts of new generated power by 2030. The report highlights the importance of gender mainstreaming in the off-grid solar sector, as women are often the primary users of energy in households. The report also emphasizes the need for a comprehensive approach to off-grid solar energy, including policy and regulatory frameworks, market intelligence, business performance, access to finance, and cross-sectoral integration. The report highlights the importance of a comprehensive approach to off-grid solar energy, including policy and regulatory frameworks, market intelligence, business performance, access to finance, and cross-sectoral integration. The report also emphasizes the need for a coordinated effort among private companies, governments, and donors to support the growth of the off-grid solar sector.
