Abstract
This participant workbook is part of the training series, focusing on creating an inclusive learning environment for all students, particularly those with disabilities. The toolkit is designed to support educators in developing strategies to promote inclusive education. The training emphasizes the importance of creating a sense of community and belonging among learners. Research suggests that students learn best when they feel part of a community, safe, accepted, and included. The toolkit provides activities and exercises to help educators understand the value of inclusive education and develop strategies to promote it. For instance, the activity on Slide 10 asks participants to circle True or False statements related to learning, such as "We learn best when we feel we are part of a community" and "We learn best when we are isolated." This exercise aims to raise awareness about the importance of inclusion in the learning process. The toolkit also focuses on identifying and enhancing inclusive practices in the classroom. Slide 23 asks participants to describe strategies that promote inclusion, such as using Universal Design for Learning (UDL) approaches, disability-based approaches, and other inclusive practices. The example provided on Slide 23 highlights the use of choral reading, Braille books, and sign language to promote inclusion. The toolkit encourages educators to think creatively about how to make their teaching practices more inclusive. The training also explores the values and beliefs related to providing inclusive education. Participants are asked to identify their position on a continuum related to including children with disabilities in the mainstream setting. This exercise aims to help educators reflect on their own biases and develop a more inclusive mindset. The toolkit provides a range of activities and exercises to support educators in developing their skills and knowledge to promote inclusive education. The National Reading Programme in Malawi aims to improve literacy rates among children, particularly those from disadvantaged backgrounds. The Universal Design for Learning Literacy Toolkit is designed to support this initiative by providing educators with the skills and knowledge to create an inclusive learning environment. By promoting inclusive education, the toolkit aims to improve literacy rates and reduce the achievement gap between students with and without disabilities. The toolkit is designed to be used in conjunction with the training series, which provides educators with the opportunity to learn from experts and share their own experiences. The training series is part of the Reading for All Malawi Activity, which is funded by the United States Agency for International Development (USAID). The activity aims to improve literacy rates among children in Malawi and promote inclusive education. The toolkit provides a range of activities and exercises to support educators in developing their skills and knowledge to promote inclusive education. By using the toolkit, educators can develop strategies to promote inclusion, create a sense of community and belonging among learners, and improve literacy rates among children with and without disabilities. The toolkit is an essential resource for educators in Malawi who are committed to promoting inclusive education and improving literacy rates among children.
