Abstract
The policy document was developed by an Expert Consultant to the USAID's GGI project and provides an analysis of the continuing medical education and doctors' professional development system in Georgia. The document also offers recommendations for improvement based on Georgian and international best practices. Continuing medical education is a widely recognized practice aimed at enhancing the professional competencies and clinical and behavioral skills of doctors, as well as improving the overall healthcare system and ensuring safe services to patients. The policy document focuses on developing and improving the level of doctors' professional competencies, which is essential for providing high-quality healthcare services. The presentation and discussion of the policy document were attended by representatives from various stakeholders, including the Parliament's Committee for Health Protection and Social Issues and the Committee for Education, Science, and Culture, as well as the Ministries of Education and Science, Health, Labour, and Social Affairs, the Administration of the Government of Georgia, academic, non-governmental, and international organizations, and the Doctors' Associations of Georgia. These stakeholders actively participated in the discussions, providing valuable insights and feedback on the policy document. The policy document is part of the GGI's support to the Parliament's Committee of Health Protection and Social Issues under Result 3: Strengthen Policy Development and Lawmaking Processes. The document aims to improve the continuing medical education system in Georgia, which is essential for enhancing the quality of healthcare services and ensuring the safety of patients. The policy document provides a comprehensive analysis of the current continuing medical education system in Georgia, highlighting its strengths and weaknesses. It also offers recommendations for improvement, including the development of a national continuing medical education strategy, the establishment of a continuing medical education council, and the provision of training and capacity-building programs for healthcare professionals.
