Abstract
Born in 1953, she began her academic journey by studying construction at the Hanoi University of Civil Engineering in 1964, an achievement notable for its rarity at the time. As an excellent student and graduate, she pursued a career in academia, becoming an associate professor at the Hanoi Architectural University's urban architecture department. Throughout her 47-year career, Vu Thi Vinh has held various leadership positions, including Vice Rector at the Hanoi Architectural University from 1996 to 2003. She then served as Vice General Secretary of the Association of Cities of Vietnam (ACVN) from 2003 to 2013, and later as General Secretary from 2013 to 2015. During her tenure at ACVN, she collaborated with government agencies, including the Ministry of Construction, to promote urban housing development and upgrade urban infrastructure throughout Vietnam. Vu Thi Vinh's expertise extends to green buildings, energy-efficient construction, and urban planning development. She has worked alongside various programs, such as the USAID Vietnam Clean Energy Program and the United Nations Human Settlements Program, to promote sustainable urban development among municipal leaders nationwide. As a speaker and trainer, she shares her knowledge and experience, providing recommendations and lessons learned from other cities' experiences to help trainees address similar challenges in their urban jurisdictions. Vu Thi Vinh's commitment to sustainable urban development is evident in her vision for Vietnam's cities. She believes that local authorities play a crucial role in deciding the effectiveness of projects and that leaders who are open to improvement will earn the public's trust, leading to successful city development. She also emphasizes the importance of considering long-term development and sustainability in urban spaces, including green buildings, traffic, and other infrastructure. Throughout her career, Vu Thi Vinh has received numerous awards and recognition for her contributions to education and urban development. In 2001, she received Vietnam's second-class Labor Order award for her role as an educator, and in 1998, she was awarded the honorable Meritorious Teacher title. Her determination and flexibility have enabled her to overcome challenges, including being a younger woman in a male-dominated field, and she has proven herself to be a strong leader. Vu Thi Vinh's personal life is also notable for its balance between work and family. She lives with her husband, a professor and architect, and their two sons, who are also involved in the construction industry. Her family serves as her greatest motivation and encouragement, and she continues to inspire others with her dedication to sustainable urban development.
