Project assistance completion report : family planning self reliance project, grantee -- Costa Rican Demographic Association
Sign inUSAID. MISSION TO COSTA RICA
Presents final Mission report on a project (7/83-9/88) to support family planning in Costa Rica.

Abstract
The project was successful, as it led to a new focus on the public sector as a provider of reproductive health services, increasing the responsibility of the public sector in both political and financial terms. It also provided the foundation for a contraceptive social marketing program (CSM). Inputs were made by the International Planned Parenthood Federation (IPPF), in providing core support to the grantee, the Asociacion Demografica Costarricense (ADC), as well as by the national Social Security Agency and the Ministry of Health, which provided clinical services, personnel, and facilities. The project financed contraceptives, communications, logistics, and research support. The project was modified in 1988 to change the implementing agencies to the public sector and to make PROFAMILIA a separate grantee for the CSM program. This decision has proven beneficial, from both an institutional and a demographic point of view. There is now a strong relationship between the expenditures for the CSM program and its actual achievements.
