Abstract
The protocol aims to provide a comprehensive framework for nutritional care and support to individuals living with HIV in Rwanda. The protocol is based on the World Health Organization's (WHO) guidelines for nutritional care of people living with HIV. The protocol emphasizes the importance of nutritional care in the management of HIV/AIDS. It highlights the relationship between nutrition and HIV, including the impact of HIV on nutritional status, the role of nutrition in the prevention and treatment of HIV-related complications, and the importance of nutritional support in the management of HIV/AIDS. The protocol provides guidelines for the nutritional care of people living with HIV, including children under 6 months, children between 6 months and 17 years, adults, and pregnant and lactating women. It also provides guidance on the management of HIV-related complications, such as diarrhea, fever, and weight loss. The protocol emphasizes the importance of community-based care and support for people living with HIV. It provides guidance on the role of community health workers in providing nutritional care and support, as well as the importance of community-based initiatives to promote nutrition and health. The protocol also provides guidance on the collection and analysis of data on nutritional status and HIV-related complications. It emphasizes the importance of monitoring and evaluation in the implementation of the protocol and provides guidance on the use of tools and resources to support data collection and analysis. The protocol is organized into three parts: Generalities on Nutrition and HIV, Nutritional Care of People Living with HIV, and Follow-up and Evaluation. The first part provides an overview of the relationship between nutrition and HIV, including the impact of HIV on nutritional status and the role of nutrition in the prevention and treatment of HIV-related complications. The second part provides guidelines for the nutritional care of people living with HIV, including children under 6 months, children between 6 months and 17 years, adults, and pregnant and lactating women. The third part provides guidance on the collection and analysis of data on nutritional status and HIV-related complications, as well as the importance of monitoring and evaluation in the implementation of the protocol. The protocol includes several annexes, including a classification of HIV infection and disease in adults and adolescents, a classification of pediatric HIV infection and treatment, and a list of local recipes for nutritional support. It also includes several tables and figures to support the implementation of the protocol.
