Abstract
The project aims to prevent and control pollution in the El Alto-Lago Titicaca watershed, which is a critical water source for the region. The project is divided into three focus areas: Focus Area 1, Focus Area 2, and Focus Area 3. Focus Area 1 focuses on preventing industrial and urban pollution, while Focus Area 2 focuses on managing the Bahía de Cohana, a critical water body in the watershed. Focus Area 3 focuses on communication and participation of local communities in the project. The project has made significant progress in the second quarter of 2011, with advancements in all three focus areas. In Focus Area 1, the Componente 1: Prevención y Control Ambiental de la Contaminación Industrial y Urbana has developed new interventions, including the Estrategia de Intervenciones en El Alto and the Estrategia de Intervenciones en Pucarani. These interventions aim to improve the management of waste and pollution in the El Alto and Pucarani municipalities. In Focus Area 2, the Componente 2: Manejo Integrado de los Recursos Naturales en la Bahía de Cohana has made progress in implementing instruments for managing the Katari River watershed. The project has also implemented a system for monitoring biodiversity, which involves the participation of local communities. Additionally, the project has implemented plans for managing totora, a critical plant species in the Bahía de Cohana. In Focus Area 3, the Componente 3: Comunicación y Participación Ciudadana has conducted training sessions on environmental management for public and private actors. The project has also produced media products and conducted communication and education campaigns to raise awareness about environmental issues. The project has achieved significant results in the second quarter of 2011, including the implementation of new interventions, the development of new instruments for managing the watershed, and the improvement of communication and participation of local communities. The project continues to make progress in achieving its objectives and will continue to work towards preventing and controlling pollution in the El Alto-Lago Titicaca watershed. The project has also identified priorities and challenges for the next quarter, including the prevention and control of pollution, the management of natural resources, and communication and participation of local communities. The project will continue to work towards achieving these objectives and will provide updates on its progress in future reports. The project has a strong focus on community participation and has established partnerships with local communities, government agencies, and other stakeholders. The project has also established a system for monitoring and evaluating its progress, which will help to ensure that the project is achieving its objectives and making a positive impact on the environment. Overall, the PROLAGO project is making significant progress in preventing and controlling pollution in the El Alto-Lago Titicaca watershed. The project's focus on community participation, partnership-building, and monitoring and evaluation will help to ensure that the project achieves its objectives and makes a lasting impact on the environment.
