Abstract
The activity partners with local and international organizations and works closely with the Ministry of Education (MoE), the Ghana Education Service (GES), and other institutions to achieve this goal. The activity's program was adjusted in Fiscal Year 2017 to focus more intensely on reading instruction. A small path pilot was conducted to test the effectiveness of the MoE's proposed reforms to primary math curricula by developing and implementing innovative approaches to teaching mathematics in a small number of primary school classrooms. The Year 4 work plan emphasizes teaching and learning strategies that can produce measurable and improved reading outcomes for 1.1 million pupils in KG2 through P2. The activity works in 100 performing and transitioning districts in all 10 regions, covering approximately 7,278 public primary schools, 30,000 teachers, Head Teachers, and Curriculum Leads, and engages 90 Core Trainers, 800 District Teacher Support Team members, and 800 Circuit Supervisors to train, support, and monitor the implementation of the Early Grade Reading Program. The activity's monitoring, evaluation, and learning systems feature as part of the plan to ensure effective implementation, monitoring, and monitoring of the implementation of the teaching and learning strategies. The activity's goal is to improve reading performance in primary schools in Ghana. The activity's major accomplishments in the quarter include the following: * Improved availability of teaching and learning materials, including the distribution of KG2 and P1 Term 2 materials and the validation of KG2 and P1 Term 3 materials. * Strengthened in-service training for teachers, including the testing of the P2 Term 1 sample week in Dagbani prototype schools and the coaching and school-based in-service training for 14,556 Head Teachers and Curriculum Leads. * Enhanced math instruction, including the completion of the Term 2 training for 260 Head Teachers, coaches, P1 teachers, and P2 teachers, and the distribution of teacher guides, coaching manuals, and other materials to 98 schools in 4 districts. The activity's monitoring, evaluation, and learning systems include the collection of Term 3 FOI data for the Dagbani prototype, the monitoring of training events, materials distribution, and implementation of Learning's strategies, and the collection of data on the impact of teaching and learning. The activity's geographic coverage is 10 regions, and its target beneficiaries include the MoE/GES and affiliated institutions at national and regional levels, as well as pupils, teachers, and school administrators. The activity's reporting period is January 1-March 31, 2018.
