Abstract
The project aims to improve agricultural productivity and food security in the region. The Dakawa Rice Farm is located in the Kambala Village, and its rehabilitation is critical to achieving the project's objectives. The existing feasibility study conducted in 1996 provides a foundation for the current evaluation and design criteria report. The study identified the need for rehabilitation of the irrigation and drainage infrastructure to improve water use efficiency and reduce soil salinity. The report highlights the importance of applying the 1996 study's findings to the proposed IRRIP works. A review of available data indicates that the water resources in the area are limited, with a potential for only 1,200 cubic meters per second of water flow. The soil suitability for rice cultivation is also a concern, with the soil being prone to salinity and waterlogging. Topographical surveys and mapping have been conducted to identify the optimal layout for the irrigation and drainage infrastructure. The environmental impact assessment for the project has been conducted, and the results indicate that the rehabilitation of the Dakawa Rice Farm will have a positive impact on the environment. The project will improve water use efficiency, reduce soil salinity, and increase agricultural productivity. However, the assessment also identifies potential environmental concerns, including changes in water quality and induced flooding. The irrigation and drainage infrastructure will be designed to manage water use efficiently and reduce soil salinity. The design will take into account the topographical and soil conditions of the area, as well as the water resources available. The infrastructure will include canals, dams, and pumps to manage the water flow and ensure optimal water use. The project will also include environmental assessment work for the Dakawa expansion, which will involve a review of the environmental impact assessment and the development of a project brief. The brief will outline the project's objectives, scope, and timeline, as well as the environmental assessment requirements. The rehabilitation of the Dakawa Rice Farm is a critical component of the Tanzania Irrigation and Rural Roads Infrastructure Project. The project will improve agricultural productivity and food security in the region, while also reducing soil salinity and improving water use efficiency. The environmental impact assessment has identified potential concerns, but the project's design and implementation will be guided by the findings of the assessment to minimize any negative impacts.
