USAID. BUR. FOR SCIENCE AND TECHNOLOGY. OFC. OF AGRICULTURE
Summarizes mid-term evaluation (XD-AAZ-892-A) of a project to develop means of articially inducing maturation and spawning of captive milkfish, develop improved methods of larval rearing of milkfish fry produced from such spawning, and transfer this technology to LDC"s.
1989

Abstract
External evaluation covers the period 1984-12/88. Though overfunded (largely due to a 94.5% overhead), the project is on schedule and the contractor, the Oceanic Institute of Hawaii, has accomplished most project objectives, primarily artifical inducement of milkfish to spawn by implantation of slow-release hormones. With the successful transfer of this technology to Indonesia (largely thanks to the scientists at Gondol) and Taiwan, the project has a clear potential to have a major impact on the culture of warmwater brackish and marine finfish on LDC"s. Special commendation is made of Dr. C.S. Lee, the Principal Investigator. The key role of the Technical Advisory Group in directing research design and approach is also acknowledged. It is recommended that current work be continued until the PACD and that the project then be extended and expanded to include additional economically important brackish and marine finfish such as seabass Lates calcarifer, groupers Epinephales sp., and sea breams.
