Abstract
C2O is currently engaged in research and development activities in several countries, including DR Congo, Uganda, Botswana, Ghana, South Africa, Afghanistan, Iraq, and El Salvador, among others. The organization has received funding from USAID's Higher Education Solutions Network (HESN) program, with approximately $4 million unexpended. C2O has collaborated with various US agencies, including the Department of State's Bureau for Conflict and Stability Operations and the Department of Defense's Advanced Expeditionary Warfare Development. The organization has also conducted research on topics such as the impact of conflict on local communities, the effectiveness of peacebuilding initiatives, and the role of education in promoting economic development. One of the key areas of focus for C2O is research on vulnerable youth, particularly in countries such as DR Congo, Ghana, and El Salvador. In DR Congo, C2O has worked with the Former Child Soldiers and the Peace Center to promote self-sufficiency in food production. In Ghana, the organization has supported a program to encourage street youth to return to farming. In El Salvador, C2O has conducted research on the use of hydroponics and the impact of gangs on local communities. C2O has also explored the potential for collaborative efforts with the US government's Countering Violent Extremism (CVE) program. The organization has identified Trinidad and Tobago as a possible case study for a collaborative effort, given the country's high rates of youth violence and the potential for foreign interests to exploit local crime and violence. C2O has also noted the importance of addressing the root causes of violence, including poverty, unemployment, and lack of access to education and economic opportunities. Research on CVE has highlighted the need for a more nuanced understanding of the drivers of violent extremism, including the role of foreign interests and the impact of social media on radicalization. C2O has also emphasized the importance of engaging local communities and local communities' leaders in CVE efforts, as well as the need for a more comprehensive approach that addresses the social, economic, and economic drivers of violence. In Trinidad and Tobago, C2O has identified a number of key issues related to youth violence, including high rates of crime and violence, particularly among young people. The organization has also noted the importance of addressing the root causes of violence, including poverty, unemployment, and lack of access to education and economic opportunities. C2O has also highlighted the need for a more comprehensive approach to addressing CVE, one that includes a range of interventions, such as community-based programs, education and job training initiatives, and economic development programs. The Inter-American Development Bank has also been involved in efforts to address youth violence in Trinidad and Tobago, through a project focused on agricultural sector reform. The project has included initiatives such as restructuring the sugar industry, reforming the agricultural sector, and improving land registration. C2O has noted the potential for these initiatives to have a positive impact on reducing youth violence, particularly if they are designed and implemented in a way that addresses the root causes of violence. Data on youth offenses in Trinidad and Tobago has shown a significant increase in certain types of crime, including sexual offenses, wounding and shooting, and robbery. The data has also highlighted the need for a more comprehensive approach to addressing CVE, one that includes a range of interventions, such as community-based programs, education and job training initiatives, and economic development programs.
