USAID. MISSION TO GUATEMALA

Costello, Charles E. · 1984
Abstract
The project will be implemented by la Asociacion Pro-Agua del Pueblo (AdP) in collaboration with the Federacion Nacional para Agua Potable y Saneamiento Rural. Approximately 40 water systems and 3,000 latrines will be built, operated, and maintained by the targeted communities, with TA provided by AdP. Related activities will include: (1) organizing and training community water committees who will administer local resources (labor, materials) in support of construction and operation; (2) strengthening and expanding an existing rotating credit fund to finance water system construction; (3) providing health education, in conjunction with local schools and other PVO"s; (4) integrating water and sanitation activities with other community development activities and other institutions; (5) training at least two persons from each community to operate and maintain the water systems; (6) offering courses on water and soil conservation in select communities; and (7) establishing better coordination of nongovernmental organizations through the Federation and encouraging more development institutions to incorporate water projects in their rural development programs. The project will provide funding for a percentage of AdP expenditures including salaries, administrative costs, and equipment. Counterpart funds for operating and administrative costs will be provided by other international donors and by communities (which will make monetary as well as in-kind contributions). It is expected that at least 17,550 persons will benefit from the new water systems and latrines.
