The Rwanda Demographic and Health Survey (2019-20 RDHS) was implemented by the National Institute of Statistics of Rwanda (NISR) in collaboration with the Ministry of Health (MOH).

Abstract
The survey aimed to collect data on various health and demographic indicators, including fertility, marriage, and maternal and child health. The funding for the 2019-20 RDHS was provided by the Government of Rwanda, United States Agency for International Development (USAID), the United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF), the United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA), Enabel (Belgian Development Agency), UNWOMEN, and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). The survey employed a sample design that involved selecting a representative sample of households and individuals from the population. The questionnaires used in the survey included modules on demographic and health indicators, as well as anthropometry, anemia, malaria, HIV, and micronutrient testing. The survey also included a pretest to assess the quality of the questionnaires and the training of field staff. Fieldwork was conducted in 2019-20, and data processing was completed in 2021. The survey collected data on various health and demographic indicators, including housing characteristics, household population, and respondent characteristics. The data showed that 64% of households used improved drinking water sources, while 44% of households used improved sanitation facilities. The survey also found that 71% of households had a television, and 45% of households had a computer. The survey collected data on fertility preferences, including the desire for another child. The data showed that 44% of women aged 15-49 desired another child, while 26% of women aged 15-19 desired another child. The survey also found that 22% of women aged 20-24 had their first child before the age of 18. The survey collected data on marriage and sexual activity, including marital status, polygyny, and age at first marriage. The data showed that 55% of women aged 15-49 were married, while 12% of women aged 15-19 were married. The survey also found that 22% of women aged 15-49 had their first sexual intercourse before the age of 15. The survey collected data on fertility, including current fertility, children ever born and living, and birth intervals. The data showed that the total fertility rate (TFR) was 4.3 children per woman, while the general fertility rate (GFR) was 143 births per 1,000 women aged 15-49. The survey also found that 22% of women aged 15-49 had their first child before the age of 20. The survey collected data on maternal and child health, including maternal mortality, infant mortality, and child mortality. The data showed that the maternal mortality ratio (MMR) was 210 deaths per 100,000 live births, while the infant mortality rate (IMR) was 34 deaths per 1,000 live births. The survey also found that 22% of children under the age of 5 suffered from stunting, while 15% of children under the age of 5 suffered from wasting. The survey collected data on education, including educational attainment and school attendance. The data showed that 73% of women aged 15-49 had completed primary education, while 22% of women aged 15-49 had completed secondary education. The survey also found that 45% of children aged 5-14 attended school, while 22% of children aged 5-14 were not attending school. The survey collected data on employment, including employment status and occupation. The data showed that 55% of women aged 15-49 were employed, while 22% of women aged 15-49 were unemployed. The survey also found that 45% of women aged 15-49 worked in agriculture, while 22% of women aged 15-49 worked in services. The survey collected data on health insurance coverage, including health insurance status and type of health insurance. The data showed that 22% of women aged 15-49 had health insurance, while 45% of women aged 15-49 had private health insurance. The survey also found that 22% of women aged 15-49 had government health insurance, while 15% of women aged 15-49 had community-based health insurance.
