Abstract
The meeting aimed to finalize a draft workplan, consolidate lessons learned, improve collaboration with other agencies, and strengthen the team. The SRS was attended by the Shejeh Salam team, USAID, other donors, and international implementers working in the same regions. Regional teams presented on the context, highlighting positive trends since December 2020. However, significant challenges persist, including a large vacuum of authority, fragmentation of the In Opposition (IO) group, and threats to the Rome Peace Initiative with the South Sudan Opposition Movements' Alliance (SSOMA). Public unhappiness with the lack of progress on the Revitalized Agreement on the Resolution of the Conflict in South Sudan (R-ARCSS) is also a concern, particularly among urban youth. The SRS emphasized the need to monitor closely the constitution development process, elections, and security sector reform, particularly the integration of forces. These areas have the potential to demonstrate real progress or fuel politico-ethnic divisions. Climate change is also impacting livelihood security and contributing to resource-based conflict, with severe flooding and irregular rainfall patterns affecting the region. The Shejeh Salam team has made progress in meeting its targets, including initiating programming in 11 counties, setting up three field offices, and establishing a roaming program team. However, there is still a need to develop a media business model, link trauma awareness to psycho-social care, connect local and national issues, and strengthen communication between implementers, especially when planning events. The team also highlighted the importance of planning for seasonality, given climate change, and monitoring and adapting to mitigate harms and promote opportunities. This includes identifying and including groups that may be excluded, not meaningfully included, or threatened by the targeted focus. The SRS concluded with structured teambuilding exercises to strengthen the team and improve collaboration. The Shejeh Salam team is working in a complex and challenging environment, with multiple stakeholders and competing interests. The SRS provided an opportunity for the team to review progress, consolidate lessons learned, and plan for the future. The meeting highlighted the need for continued collaboration, adaptability, and innovation to address the complex challenges facing South Sudan. The Shejeh Salam team is committed to supporting peacebuilding and stability in South Sudan, with a focus on promoting inclusive and sustainable development. The team is working closely with local communities, civil society organizations, and government agencies to address the root causes of conflict and promote peace and stability. The SRS was an important milestone in the Shejeh Salam program, providing an opportunity for the team to reflect on progress, identify areas for improvement, and plan for the future.
