Abstract
The project targets communities where high levels of poverty and violence are prevalent, with the goal of offering positive alternatives to negative behaviors such as drug and alcohol abuse, street and domestic violence, and school bullying. The project is implemented by USAID's Regional Consolidation Program, which partners with seven municipal governments and local communities to organize the tournaments, improve soccer fields, and provide necessary equipment. Tournament regulations are designed to promote inclusivity and social cohesion, with coed teams, participant-developed rules, and competitive scoring for goals made by girls. The project also focuses on improving soccer infrastructure, with the donation of eight soccer and mini-soccer fields to municipalities in Ciénaga, El Carmen, El Tarra, Hacarí, San Calixto, and San Jacinto. The total investment for the program is approximately US$420,000. The project's objectives include strengthening ties between communities and authorities, promoting adherence to social norms, encouraging participation of women in predominantly male areas, and promoting peaceful coexistence and citizen security. By leveraging the popularity of soccer, the project aims to create a positive impact on the lives of thousands of children, youth, and adults in Colombia's most vulnerable communities. Implementation of the project involves close collaboration between USAID, municipal governments, and local communities. The project's success will be measured by the level of community engagement, the number of participants, and the impact on social norms and behaviors. The project's long-term goal is to create a sustainable and inclusive environment that promotes peaceful coexistence and social cohesion in Colombia's violence-affected areas. The project's focus on soccer as a tool for social change is rooted in the sport's ability to bring people together and promote social cohesion. By providing a positive outlet for young people, the project aims to reduce the incidence of negative behaviors and promote a culture of peace and respect in Colombia's most vulnerable communities.
