Abstract
The oceans are crucial for domestic food security and need to be conserved. Indonesia's concerted efforts to combat Illegal, Unreported, and Unregulated (IUU) fishing have helped restore fish stocks within the nation's Fisheries Management Areas (FMAs). The country aims to become the center of gravity for world fish production, generating greater economic benefits for the nation. The success of Indonesia's marine resource management efforts is attributed to the partnership between the Indonesian Ministry of Marine Affairs and Fisheries (MMAF) and the United States Agency for International Development (USAID) through the USAID Sustainable Ecosystems Advanced (SEA) Project. This partnership has enabled the implementation of sustainable fisheries management practices, including improved management of marine protected areas. The "State of the Sea" publication, produced by the USAID SEA Project and the MMAF, provides an overview of marine resource management for small-scale fisheries and critical marine habitats in Indonesia. The publication highlights the importance of advancing sustainable fisheries management, including improved management of marine protected areas. It also emphasizes the need to manage marine and coastal ecosystems to ensure both an excellent supply of fish and healthy world oceans. The publication captures the journey of promoting sustainable fisheries management in Indonesia and details the on-ground efforts being implemented at various sites. The Indonesian Ministry of Marine Affairs and Fisheries has contributed significantly to the publication, with key individuals from the ministry providing input and expertise. The publication also acknowledges the contributions of various organizations, programs, and institutions, including the SEA Core Team, AP2HI team, CI team, CTC team, ILMMA team, Marine Change team, MDPI team, Rare Indonesia team, and Reef Check Indonesia team. The publication is a critical baseline for taking stock of the past and informing future actions toward improved marine resource management in Indonesia. It provides a comprehensive overview of the marine and coastal environment of Indonesia, highlighting the importance of sustainable fisheries management and the need to conserve marine resources. The publication is a valuable resource for policymakers, researchers, and practitioners working in the field of marine resource management. The "State of the Sea" publication is a collaborative effort between the Indonesian Ministry of Marine Affairs and Fisheries and the USAID Sustainable Ecosystems Advanced (SEA) Project. The publication is a testament to the success of the partnership between the two organizations and highlights the importance of collaborative efforts in promoting sustainable fisheries management in Indonesia. The publication provides a detailed overview of the marine and coastal environment of Indonesia, including the country's marine and fishery resources, the importance of sustainable fisheries management, and the need to conserve marine resources. The publication also highlights the challenges and opportunities facing Indonesia in its efforts to promote sustainable fisheries management and conserve marine resources. The publication is a valuable resource for policymakers, researchers, and practitioners working in the field of marine resource management. It provides a comprehensive overview of the marine and coastal environment of Indonesia and highlights the importance of collaborative efforts in promoting sustainable fisheries management in the country. The "State of the Sea" publication is a critical tool for informing future actions toward improved marine resource management in Indonesia. It provides a baseline for assessing the country's progress in promoting sustainable fisheries management and conserving marine resources. The publication is a valuable resource for policymakers, researchers, and practitioners working in the field of marine resource management and is an essential tool for promoting sustainable fisheries management in Indonesia.
