The structural design of the Kabul University Dining Facility's Truss Beam B20 underwent a review process in 2016.

Abstract
The review focused on the structural integrity and compliance with design specifications. The truss beam is a critical component of the dining facility's structure, supporting loads from the building's roof and upper floors. The review identified several areas of concern. The connection between beams B26 and the steel truss was deemed inadequate for transferring loads through beam deflections from transient loads. The calculations provided did not account for this scenario, raising questions about the truss design's ability to withstand such loads. Additionally, the single horizontal bracing angles attached to the truss exceeded the maximum unbraced length limitation for a single 75x75 angle in compression, potentially compromising the structure's stability under seismic loading. The review also highlighted issues with weld design and specifications. The welds to reinforcing bars were not in accordance with the specified ASTM A706 low-alloy bars, and no calculation was provided for the weld design of the embedment. The designer was questioned about the assessment of required weld strength and the use of mill certificates to identify chemical composition and formula to estimate carbon content available weld strength. Furthermore, the review noted discrepancies in weld symbols and types. The embedded bar weld to plate was indicated as a fillet weld, but it was actually a flare bevel weld. The truss welded end connections relied on a precise fit to the embedded plates and end struts, but the detail connection did not allow for relative rotations, which could compromise the weld's strength. The review also raised concerns about the truss end support conditions, which were not clearly defined. The detail connection did not allow for relative rotations, and only the two front pages of the STAAD analysis were provided for review. This lack of information made it difficult to assess the structural integrity of the truss beam and the overall stability of the dining facility building. The review's findings and recommendations will be crucial in ensuring the structural safety and integrity of the Kabul University Dining Facility's Truss Beam B20.
