Abstract
The curriculum combines two years of Science education into a single year, with content organized around themes and subtopics. Each lesson is designed to be taught over multiple periods, with some lessons requiring preparation ahead of time. The ALP Science Curriculum is taught for 45 minutes a day, five days a week. The duration of a topic or lesson may vary in length, with some topics requiring two or more lessons to complete. Teachers are advised to read each lesson carefully before teaching and to divide the content over multiple lessons to maintain the flow and structure of the lesson. Supplementary reading materials have been developed to support the ALP Science Curriculum, particularly in cases where teachers may not have access to the Grade Three and Four Science Pupil's Textbooks. These materials are designed to be used in conjunction with the ALP Teacher Guide and provide additional information and activities for learners. The 3-2-1 strategy is a key component of the supplementary reading materials, which involves learners writing about three things they discovered, two things they found interesting, and one question they still have after reading an informational text. This strategy is designed to help learners develop their reading comprehension skills and to engage with the material in a more interactive way. The supplementary reading materials cover a range of topics, including Earth, the Solar System, and Minerals in Liberia. Each topic is broken down into smaller subtopics, with accompanying activities and exercises to help learners understand the material. The materials are designed to be used in conjunction with the ALP Teacher Guide and to provide additional support for learners. The ALP Science Curriculum and supplementary reading materials are designed to support the Accelerated Quality Education for Liberian Children project, which aims to improve the quality of education in Liberia. The materials are intended for use in schools and educational settings, and are designed to be used by teachers and learners at Level 2. The curriculum and supplementary reading materials are the result of a collaborative effort between the Education Development Center, Inc. (EDC) and the United States Agency for International Development (USAID). The materials are available under the Creative Commons Attribution 4.0 IGO license, which allows for free use, distribution, and adaptation of the materials for non-commercial purposes. The ALP Science Curriculum and supplementary reading materials are designed to provide a comprehensive and engaging educational experience for Liberian students. By combining the best practices in Science education with interactive and engaging activities, the materials aim to support the development of learners' critical thinking and problem-solving skills.
