Abstract
The guide was designed in collaboration with the Literacy, Language and Learning Initiative (L3) and funded by USAID. The guide is aligned with the Competence-based Curriculum produced by the Rwanda Education Board in 2015. The guide emphasizes the importance of aligning the syllabus, teaching, learning, and assessment approaches to ensure that the education system produces the type of citizens the country needs. The guide highlights the role of teachers in the success of the syllabus, as they are responsible for helping learners gain appropriate skills and develop the ability to apply what they have learned to real-life situations. The guide is structured into 10 units, each focusing on a specific theme. Unit 1, "Welcome to the Classroom," introduces the concept of respect for everyone in the classroom. The unit includes 15 lessons, assessment tasks, and a focus on attitudes and values. The guide also emphasizes the importance of creating positive language learning experiences, fostering attitudes and values, and integrating cross-cutting issues into teaching and learning. The guide includes a table of contents, an introduction, and a glossary of words. The Rwanda Education Board holds the copyright for the materials in this collection, and the publication was made possible by the support of the American people through USAID. The contents are the responsibility of Education Development Center (EDC) and do not necessarily reflect the views of USAID or the United States Government. The guide is designed to help teachers of English in Primary 1 create a supportive and inclusive learning environment that promotes the development of learners' language skills and attitudes. The guide provides a framework for lesson planning and preparation, assessment tasks, and a focus on attitudes and values. The guide's emphasis on attitudes and values is reflected in the various units, which focus on topics such as respect for others, care for classroom resources, and concern for keeping bodies and clothes clean. The guide also includes a focus on storytelling as a way to learn language and appreciating the importance of keeping time in daily routines. The guide's structure and content are designed to support the Competence-based Curriculum and the educational philosophy of the Rwanda Education Board, which aims to ensure that young people achieve their full potential in terms of relevant knowledge, skills, and attitudes that prepare them to be well-integrated in society and exploit employment opportunities.
