Abstract
They are visually appealing and convey information quickly by showing relationships between ideas using lines and boxes. A central idea is the foundation of all concept maps, and the format is influenced by the type of information being presented. Classification maps organize ideas into categories or groups, arranging information into levels according to importance, size, or attributes. This type of map illustrates the hierarchical classification of subjects and indicates which information is most important. Classification maps can be useful for taxonomy, breed origins, or comparing and contrasting. For example, a classification map in meteorology might depict three major subcategories: weather, climate, and atmosphere, with subcategories of weather and atmosphere further described by variables included in each. Flow maps graphically depict a sequence of events in order, representing complex processes and helping learners identify various stages and substages of an event. Flow maps can be used to illustrate how-to demonstrations, environmental cycles, and steps for a laboratory analysis. For instance, a flow map might describe the process for determining dry matter weight of a forage crop, requiring learners to follow the process step-by-step. Multiflow maps help simplify complex cause-and-effect relationships by representing one central event with causes and effects depicted on each side. This type of map can be used for subjects such as animal nervousness, weight gain, or the weather. Multiflow maps can be used to describe the invasive species process to establishment, highlighting decision points in the process and encouraging learners to consider the options on the left side of each decision. Concept maps have several benefits, including addressing multiple learning styles, facilitating knowledge and thinking, and promoting retention of new knowledge. They are easy for instructors to prepare and easy for learners to comprehend, making them an effective approach to engaging learners. Concept maps can be used for various learning or instructing styles and are a great way to improve the presentation of any subject matter.
