Abstract
The concept of mentoring has a long history, dating back to Greek mythology, where the mentor was seen as a teacher, advisor, and role model. Mentoring is defined as a lasting relationship between a youth and an adult, requiring continuous involvement and support. It is a nurturing process where a more skilled or experienced person serves as a role model, teaches, sponsors, encourages, counsels, and befriends a less skilled or less experienced person. The module is activity-based, with each activity described in three phases: activate prior knowledge, constructing meaning, and reflect and apply. In phase one, the facilitator helps participants assess and share their prior knowledge and experiences. In phase two, the facilitator assists participants to make connections by constructing meaning and developing conceptual understanding of the module. In phase three, the facilitator assesses the learning of the participants through applying and reflecting on the learning. The purpose of this module is to aid mentors in understanding the need for positive role models in the teaching profession. Mentoring in teaching is extremely important in providing teachers with the support and structure required for them to carry out their various tasks. The module highlights the needs of mentoring and peer coaching in the professional development and improvement of teaching and learning practices. The module is designed to provide a regular life-long mentoring support to primary school teachers in four districts of Sindh and Balouchistan. It aims to help mentors identify, explore, maintain, and sustain information on various mentoring techniques. The module will facilitate the growth of effective mentoring and the implementation of the mentoring process for the continual development of public sector schoolteachers. Mentors who complete this module are expected to acquire certain skills and competencies, including understanding the concept and process of mentoring, providing guidance in lesson planning, teaching methodologies, and evaluation techniques, building the concept of teamwork, and understanding the effectiveness of the mentoring process. They will also be able to describe various classroom learning environments and related issues, suggest alternative strategies for teaching in classrooms with diverse or conflicting needs, and understand the importance of mentor and mentor-teacher relationships in personal and professional development. The module has two major themes: mentoring and peer coaching. Theme 1: Mentoring will help participants understand the basic concepts and applications of mentoring for teachers' professional development, including the concept of mentoring, mentoring models, the role of mentoring in teachers' professional development, and the importance of mentor and mentor-teacher relationships. Theme 2: Peer Coaching will help participants build their understanding of peer coaching and co-teaching, including the meaning, purpose, and process of peer coaching. The module's daily agenda includes registration, recitation of the Holy Quran, welcome and introductions, understanding the concept of mentoring, mentoring, tea breaks, lunch, discussion, and other activities. The module is designed to provide a comprehensive understanding of mentoring and peer coaching, and to equip mentors with the skills and competencies necessary to support the professional development of teachers.
