USAID. MISSION TO TUNISIA
PACR of a project (9/81-9/85) to help the Tunisian Federation of Women Jurists (AFCJ) conduct research and disseminate information on women's legal rights in Tunisia.
1987

Abstract
Overall, the project was a success. AFJC published and distributed a question and answer guide providing quick answers to legal questions about women's rights; this work is now used as a valuable reference source in various regions of the country. The Federation also: (1) hosted 9 public conferences and seminars, which were widely attended by jurists and women and proved very fruitful, despite difficulties in providing transportation to remote areas and in finding adequate meeting places; (2) conducted 21 extensions campaigns; and (3) produced a number of research and statistical studies which are to be published, along with their recommendations, in a special edition. The main subjects treated in these efforts were women's employment, the causes of divorce, and women's participation in elective institutions; other subjects included, inter alia, juvenile delinquency and the guardianship of children. The project also provided selected books and reviews to augment the AFJC library. On the negative side, the project suffered from its reliance on the President of the AFJC, who was very busy and did not have enough time to manage the project effectively. The project officer attempted, with little success, to persuade the President to delegate authority in order to accelerate the pace of project activity. The project was also delayed by the fact the the AFJC is under the sponsorship and financial management of the National Union of Tunisian Women (UNFT), an organization headed by the then Minister and wife of the then Prime Minister.
