Abstract
The project is supporting the Government of Nigeria at the federal, state, local government area (LGA), and community levels to reduce under-five and maternal mortality by delivering quality services to manage and prevent malaria during pregnancy and in children under five through seasonal malaria chemoprevention (SMC). The PMI-S project is implemented under an indefinite delivery indefinite quantity (IDIQ) contract with several task orders (TOs). Building on TO 01, TO 02 supports the federal level on strengthening the capacity of the National Malaria Elimination Program (NMEP) in developing national malaria control policies and guidelines to implement the National Malaria Strategic Plan (NMSP) 2021–2025 and analyze data to inform program decisions and investments. The objectives of TO 02 to be accomplished by engagement at the federal level are: (1) improve quality of and access to comprehensive malaria case management (MCM) services, (2) improve evidence for decision making, (3) improve drug-based prevention and treatment approaches (intermittent preventive treatment of malaria in pregnancy [IPTp] and SMC), and (4) strengthen existing health systems and improve NMEP management. PMI-S made major strides in improving the quality of malaria services working closely with the NMEP and other key implementing partners (IPs). Seven out of 10 indicators (70%) are on target, with notable achievements including the development of case management (CM) training manuals and standard operating procedures (SOPs), quarterly trend analyses with eight states, and technical inputs in SMC working group meetings. The PMI-S project has made significant progress in improving the quality of malaria services, with 100% achievement on several indicators. These include supporting NMEP to develop CM training manuals and SOPs, developing and disseminating quarterly trend analyses with eight states, and providing technical inputs in 100% of SMC working group meetings. Additionally, PMI-S has supported the NMEP to develop two abstracts, one of which has been accepted for the American Society of Tropical Medicine and Hygiene (ASTMH) Annual meeting, and four National Malaria Data Repository (NMDR) bulletins. These achievements demonstrate the project's commitment to improving malaria services and contributing to the reduction of under-five and maternal mortality in Nigeria. The PMI-S project has also strengthened existing health systems and improved NMEP management. This has been achieved through the provision of technical inputs in 100% of Case management (CM), Surveillance Monitoring and Evaluation (SME), and Program Management (PM) coordination meetings. Furthermore, PMI-S has supported the development of national malaria control policies and guidelines to implement the NMSP 2021–2025. This has involved analyzing data to inform program decisions and investments, and providing technical inputs to support the implementation of the NMSP. The PMI-S project has made significant progress in improving the quality of malaria services and contributing to the reduction of under-five and maternal mortality in Nigeria. The project's achievements demonstrate its commitment to improving malaria services and strengthening existing health systems. The project's success has been achieved through close collaboration with the NMEP and other key implementing partners (IPs), and the provision of technical inputs to support the implementation of the NMSP 2021–2025.
