Abstract
The country context in Madagascar is characterized by a general context of poverty and limited economic opportunities. Agriculture is a significant sector, with 70% of the population engaged in farming activities. Aquaculture is also a growing sector, with a focus on seaweed and sea cucumber production. Tourism is a major contributor to the country's economy, with a focus on ecotourism and cultural heritage. The gender analysis findings and recommendations for the seaweed and sea cucumber value chains highlight key findings, including the mapping of roles and responsibilities of global development alliance/value chain stakeholders and the mapping of gender roles and responsibilities along the value chain. Major gender differences between the seaweed and sea cucumber value chains were identified, with women playing a significant role in seaweed production but limited access to markets and resources in the sea cucumber value chain. Recommendations for the seaweed and sea cucumber value chains include general recommendations, on-farm productivity, horizontal linkages, vertical linkages, and business-enabling environment, employment, and entrepreneurship. Key findings for the cocoa and vanilla value chains include the mapping of roles and responsibilities of global development alliance/value chain stakeholders and the mapping of gender roles and responsibilities along the value chain. Major gender differences between the cocoa and vanilla value chains were identified, with women playing a significant role in cocoa production but limited access to markets and resources in the vanilla value chain. Recommendations for the cocoa and vanilla value chains include general recommendations, on-farm productivity, horizontal linkages, vertical linkages, and business-enabling environment, employment, and entrepreneurship. Key findings for the tourism sector include the mapping of roles and responsibilities of tourism-related global development alliance stakeholders and tourism sector overview, mapping of gender roles and responsibilities in tourism sector employment, employment, entrepreneurship, sustainability, and sex tourism.
