Abstract
The activity is led by Tetra Tech, with Andrew Cooke serving as the Chief of Party. The initiative is funded by the United States Agency for International Development (USAID) and is scheduled to run from May 7, 2018, to May 6, 2023. The activity is divided into two main components: Mamabaie and Menabe. The Mamabaie component focuses on improving natural resource management in the Makira-Masoala-Baie d'Antongil region, while the Menabe component targets the Menabe-Antimena Protected Area. Both components aim to promote sustainable livelihoods, improve food security, and enhance community resilience. The activity employs a strategic approach that involves five key components: Nature, Wealth, Interface and Synergize with Development Programs Delivering Services to Target Communities, Action, and Power. The Nature component focuses on improving natural resource management, while the Wealth component aims to promote economic development. The Interface and Synergize component seeks to strengthen partnerships with government, civil society, and private sector organizations. The Action component involves implementing community-based land and resource tenure policy, while the Power component aims to strengthen community, civil society, private sector, and government capacity to advocate for and share in the benefits of improved community-based land and natural resource management. The activity has made significant progress in the first quarter of FY 2019. In the Mamabaie component, 2,500 farmers received training in sustainable agriculture techniques, and demonstration plots showed yield improvements of 60% when applying the recommended practices. In the Menabe component, 1,500 farmers received training in conservation farming, and 500 hectares of mangrove forests were planted. The activity has also made progress in promoting gender equality and youth empowerment. The activity has also established partnerships with local organizations, including the Alliance Voahary Gasy and the Coastal Resources Center, University of Rhode Island. The activity has also made progress in addressing climate change. The Climate Economic Analysis for Development, Investment, and Resilience (CEADIR) framework is being used to assess the economic impacts of climate change on the activity's target communities. The activity has also established a Climate Risk Management Plan to mitigate the impacts of climate change on the activity's target communities. The activity has also made progress in promoting health and well-being. The activity has established partnerships with local health organizations to improve access to healthcare services for the target communities. The activity has also implemented health and nutrition programs to improve the health and well-being of the target communities. The activity has also made progress in promoting technology and innovation. The activity has established partnerships with local organizations to promote the use of technology and innovation in natural resource management and sustainable livelihoods. The activity has also established a knowledge management system to share best practices and lessons learned with the target communities. The activity has also made progress in promoting collaboration and knowledge sharing. The activity has established partnerships with other USAID activities, government, and civil society organizations to promote collaboration and knowledge sharing.
