Abstract
The project aims to improve access to renewable energy and energy efficiency in Nigeria. The program is being implemented in 11 states, including Kogi, Niger, Kaduna, Sokoto, Enugu, Ebonyi, Akwa-Ibom, Rivers, Lagos, Ogun, and the Federal Capital Territory. The project has four main components: increasing access to clean energy financing, providing technical assistance to financial institutions, providing vocational training and creating awareness of renewable energy and energy efficiency benefits, and enhancing governance to enact enabling policies for renewable energy and energy efficiency project development. The project also focuses on integration of cross-cutting issues, such as gender equality and female empowerment, sustainability mechanisms, youth development, policy and governance support, and local capacity development. During the second year of implementation, which covered the period from October 1, 2014, to September 30, 2015, the project made significant progress in all its components. The project provided technical assistance to financial institutions, including Micro Finance Banks and Microfinance institutions, to increase their capacity to provide clean energy financing. The project also conducted trainings and awareness creation activities for stakeholders, including farmers, artisans, and small and medium enterprises. The project's governance component focused on enhancing the enabling policies and regulations for renewable energy and energy efficiency project development. The project worked closely with the Ministry of Power, the Energy Commission of Nigeria, and other relevant stakeholders to develop and implement policies and regulations that support the development of renewable energy and energy efficiency projects. The project also made significant progress in integrating cross-cutting issues, including gender equality and female empowerment, sustainability mechanisms, youth development, policy and governance support, and local capacity development. The project's gender strategy aimed to increase the participation of women in renewable energy and energy efficiency project development and implementation. The project's management and administrative issues were also addressed during the second year of implementation. The project's management team worked closely with the implementing partner, Winrock International, to address any challenges that arose during the implementation of the project. The project's planned activities for the next quarter included the continuation of the technical assistance to financial institutions, the conduct of trainings and awareness creation activities, and the enhancement of governance to enact enabling policies for renewable energy and energy efficiency project development. The project also planned to continue its integration of cross-cutting issues and to address any management and administrative issues that may arise. The project's success stories, including the development of a renewable energy master plan for Nigeria, the establishment of a solar-powered water pumping system in a rural community, and the training of artisans in solar energy installation, were documented in the project's annexes. The project's indicator calculations, including the calculation of the number of households that have access to clean energy, were also documented in the project's annexes. Overall, the Nigeria Renewable Energy and Energy Efficiency Project (REEEP) made significant progress during its second year of implementation, and the project is on track to achieve its objectives. The project's continued focus on increasing access to clean energy financing, providing technical assistance to financial institutions, providing vocational training and creating awareness of renewable energy and energy efficiency benefits, and enhancing governance to enact enabling policies for renewable energy and energy efficiency project development will ensure the project's continued success.
