Abstract
The initiative began in 2015 and is set to conclude in 2020. The activity is funded by the United States Agency for International Development (USAID) and is implemented by RTI International. The PROTECT activity focuses on three main intermediate results: policy, research, and advocacy; institutional strengthening; and strengthened private sector investment in the wildlife sector. The activity also integrates cross-cutting issues such as gender equality, youth engagement, and local capacity development. In the third quarter of FY19, from April 1 to June 30, 2019, the PROTECT activity made significant progress in achieving its intermediate results. The activity implemented a range of interventions, including policy and advocacy efforts, institutional strengthening, and private sector engagement. The activity also focused on integrating cross-cutting issues, such as gender equality and youth engagement, into its programming. The PROTECT activity has established partnerships with a range of stakeholders, including government agencies, civil society organizations, and private sector companies. These partnerships have enabled the activity to leverage resources and expertise to achieve its objectives. The activity has also established a robust monitoring and evaluation system to track its progress and identify areas for improvement. In terms of specific achievements, the PROTECT activity has made progress in strengthening the capacity of government agencies and civil society organizations to manage and conserve natural resources. The activity has also supported the development of policies and regulations to promote sustainable tourism and conservation practices. Additionally, the activity has facilitated private sector investment in the wildlife sector, including the development of ecotourism projects and the establishment of community-based conservation initiatives. The PROTECT activity has also made progress in integrating cross-cutting issues into its programming. The activity has implemented gender-sensitive programming, including the establishment of women's groups and the provision of training and capacity-building programs for women. The activity has also engaged with youth, including the establishment of youth groups and the provision of training and capacity-building programs for young people. In terms of financial management, the PROTECT activity has maintained a strong financial management system, including the establishment of a robust budgeting and financial reporting system. The activity has also maintained a high level of transparency and accountability in its financial management practices. Overall, the PROTECT activity has made significant progress in promoting Tanzania's environment, conservation, and tourism sectors.
