Abstract
The region has been plagued by attacks from violent extremist organizations (VEOs) and inter-community violence, resulting in the displacement of large numbers of people. This displacement has put a strain on the already limited water resources, leading to interruptions in water supply in some areas. The situation has created tensions between internally displaced persons (IDPs) and host communities, which have been exploited by VEOs to spread divisive messages. To mitigate these tensions, BFRP collaborated with local leaders to organize meetings aimed at identifying and rehabilitating key broken water sources. The goal was to improve water supply and reduce frustrations related to access to this essential resource. Four water sources were successfully rehabilitated, and community members from diverse ethnic and religious backgrounds were trained to manage these resources. The training emphasized the importance of providing equal access to water and ensuring smooth management of the rehabilitated sources. Additionally, management committee members were trained to conduct awareness sessions on social unity, mutual acceptance, and forgiveness to foster peace and mitigate potential conflicts between host populations and displaced persons. The rehabilitation of the water sources has had a significant impact on the local communities. Prior to the project, residents faced difficulties in fetching clean water for their families, and the influx of displaced families had created a situation of increased demand for water. Long queues and reduced water flow often led to quarrels between women. However, with the rehabilitation of the water sources, local residents are now able to access clean water without the need for long queues or fighting. The success of the project is evident in the testimonies of local residents. One resident expressed gratitude for the rehabilitation of the water source, stating that it has made a significant difference in their daily lives. The resident noted that the water is now clean and flows well, saving them time and reducing the need for conflict over access to this essential resource. The Burkina Faso Regional Program's efforts have helped to improve water access and reduce tensions between host communities and IDPs, contributing to a more stable and peaceful environment in the region.
