Abstract
The overall goal of the Activity is to help establish MUCCRI as a recognized national and regional hub of academic, professional development, and research in climate change adaptation. The Activity aims to enhance the capacity of Makerere University to conduct research, provide training, and disseminate climate change information to stakeholders. During the reporting period from April 1, 2015 to June 30, 2015, several key activities and accomplishments were achieved. A part-time web specialist was hired to quickly build a temporary website for MUCCRI, enabling the centre to establish an online presence earlier than anticipated. The Development Studies core course, Development, Energy, and Environment, was revised to incorporate climate change information, and the lead faculty member was mentored to ensure that this new information is integrated into the course each year. Additionally, one new MSc student was enrolled, and five new undergraduate students were selected for support of their final year undergraduate research efforts. Dissemination templates were developed to share research results with stakeholders, including farmers and other end-users. These templates are being filled in by scientists with research results that can be used to inform climate change adaptation and mitigation activities. The Activity is implemented in partnership with Makerere University, aWhere Inc., and other collaborating entities, including Ugandan and U.S. government agencies, international organizations, development organizations, academic institutions, NGOs, community-based organizations, and private enterprises. The Activity is funded and managed by USAID/Uganda, with FHI 360 serving as the prime recipient. The MUCCRI is generating high-quality climate change and climate adaptation research, providing cutting-edge short- and long-term training to students, staff, and external stakeholders, and communicating with external stakeholders and disseminating climate change adaptation information. The Activity is also establishing an institutional structure for MUCCRI, which supports the centre's objectives. The Activity's monitoring and evaluation indicators are being tracked, and upcoming events, including the integration of climate change into the Development Studies curriculum, are being planned. The Activity's progress is being closely monitored, and lessons learned are being documented to inform future activities. The Makerere University Centre for Climate Change Research and Innovations (MUCCRI) is playing a critical role in enhancing the capacity of Makerere University to conduct research, provide training, and disseminate climate change information to stakeholders. The Activity's progress is being closely monitored, and lessons learned are being documented to inform future activities.
