The overall goal of the Activity is to build Ugandan capacity and proficiency to address climate adaptation and related issues. To achieve this goal, the Activity will mobilize leading academics, scientists, and researchers to work side-by-side and in partnership with Ugandan colleagues to build upon the foundational efforts made by the College of Agricultural and Environmental Sciences (CAES) and others to date in developing and establishing MUCCRI. The Activity has four key results: Institutional structure of MUCCRI is established and supports MUCCRI objectives, MUCCRI provides cutting-edge short- and long-term training to students, staff, and external stakeholders, MUCCRI generates high-quality climate change and climate adaptation research, and MUCCRI communicates with external stakeholders and disseminates climate change adaptation information. Result 1 focuses on establishing the institutional structure of MUCCRI, which involves supporting the official establishment of MUCCRI at Makerere University. This includes coordinating work plans with the strategic objectives of MUCCRI and conducting an informational campaign to increase knowledge and understanding about climate change and climate adaptation. Result 2 involves providing cutting-edge short- and long-term training to students, staff, and external stakeholders. This includes improving undergraduate and graduate coursework on climate change, providing short-term training to external stakeholders, and developing a training-of-trainers program. Result 3 focuses on generating high-quality climate change and climate adaptation research. This includes conducting research on climate change and climate adaptation, developing a research agenda, and publishing research findings in peer-reviewed journals. Result 4 involves communicating with external stakeholders and disseminating climate change adaptation information. This includes developing a communication strategy, conducting social network analysis, and disseminating climate change adaptation information through various channels. The Activity has made significant progress in the first year, with notable achievements including the establishment of MUCCRI's institutional structure, the development of a research agenda, and the provision of training to students, staff, and external stakeholders. The Activity has also established partnerships with various stakeholders, including government agencies, NGOs, and private enterprises. The Activity has a strong monitoring and evaluation framework in place, which includes the use of monitoring and evaluation indicators to track progress and assess the impact of the Activity. The Activity also has a collaboration, learning, and adapting (CLA) approach, which involves working with stakeholders to identify and address challenges and opportunities. Overall, the USAID/Uganda Education and Research to Improve Climate Change Adaptation Activity is making significant progress in establishing MUCCRI as a national and regional hub for climate science, climate adaptation, and related disciplines. The Activity has a strong focus on building Ugandan capacity and proficiency to address climate adaptation and related issues, and has established partnerships with various stakeholders to achieve this goal. The Activity has also made significant progress in the second year, with notable achievements including the development of a climate change adaptation curriculum, the provision of training to students and staff, and the publication of research findings in peer-reviewed journals.
