Abstract
The assessment aimed to identify stakeholders, their roles, and service provision in the community, as well as capture the community's needs and barriers. The process was guided by youth and designed to enhance their agency, self-efficacy, and initiative programming. The community mapping tools were designed and developed on tablets for mobile data collection. Data was collected through two types of surveys, one institutional and one community-based. The surveys were framed around six main categories: youth development, educational environment, health, social environment, inclusion, and community services. The institutional mapping survey was used to inquire about services, resources, and challenges of institutions in the area, while the community mapping survey investigated the challenges, barriers, importance, and quality of services and resources in the community. The assessment involved 16 youth from Wadi Elhoor who were trained on collecting data for the community mapping. The data was collected in-person from March 2-4, 2021. The results of the mapping surveys were used to guide the youth during the initiatives design phase. The community sample consisted of 187 participants, all residents of Wadi Elhoor. The majority of the participants were Jordanian nationals, with 1% being Palestinian. The age group surveyed ranged from 11-84, with 96% of the sample being less than 30 years old. The gender distribution was predominantly male, with 63% of the participants being males and 37% being females. The assessment identified several areas of need in the community. In the youth development category, participants reported that entertainment outlets, organized activities, libraries, and spaces for youth to gather were in need of improvement. Out of school learning services, such as knowledge stations, life skills, computer training, and English skills, were also reported to be least accessible or non-existent. Mentorship and guidance programs, including local radio, psychological counseling, and mentorship, were also reported to be least available. In the school/educational environment category, participants reported several issues with school services, including lack of connection to the school environment, lack of equipment, lack of extracurricular activities, and unsafe infrastructure. Safety-related issues, such as bullying, physical abuse, and harassment, were also reported. Barriers to education, including transportation, financial reasons, stray animals, and lack of assistance for people with learning difficulties, were also identified. In the health category, healthcare services and equipment, as well as health-related topics, require attention to understand the challenges a community faces. The assessment identified several areas of need in this category, including healthcare services, equipment, and health-related topics. The assessment provides valuable insights into the needs and challenges of the Wadi Elhoor community. The results can be used to inform initiatives and programs that aim to address these needs and improve the lives of community members.
