Abstract
The country's agricultural development is hindered by geographical challenges, including rugged terrain and limited access to irrigation. Staple crops such as maize and beans have shown yield deficiencies, with crop yields averaging 40% below regional benchmarks. The USAID-funded Food Security Program has implemented various interventions to address these challenges. The program has focused on improving agricultural productivity, enhancing market access, and improving the livelihoods of farmers. The program has implemented training programs for farmers, focusing on sustainable agricultural practices. Demonstration plots have been established in various communities, demonstrating the effectiveness of these practices. The results have shown yield improvements of 60% when farmers adopt the recommended practices. The program has also focused on improving market access for farmers. The program has facilitated market linkages for farmers, enabling them to sell their produce at competitive prices. The program has also provided training to farmers on market dynamics, enabling them to make informed decisions about their produce. The program has also provided support to farmers to improve their market access, including the provision of transportation and storage facilities. The program has also focused on improving the livelihoods of farmers, particularly women-headed households. The program has shown that women-headed households have shown higher adoption rates for all practices except mechanical land preparation. The program has also shown that the program has had a positive impact on household income, with a 27% increase in household income among program participants compared to the control group. The geographic focus of the program has been focused on the following governorates: Ta'izz, Dhamar, Ibb, Aden, Al Mukalla, Sa'ada, and Sana'a. The program has also focused on the following districts: Al Jawf, Al Mahrah, Shabwah, Ma'rib, Lahij, Abyan, and Taizz.
