Abstract
The workshop aimed to enhance the capacity of water professionals in Pakistan to manage groundwater resources effectively. The event was attended by experts from various institutions, including the University of Utah, USA, and the Water Center at MUET. The workshop focused on the application of advanced modeling techniques for groundwater management. Participants learned about the latest tools and methods for simulating groundwater flow and contaminant transport. The workshop also covered the importance of integrating groundwater management with surface water resources and the need for a holistic approach to water resources management. Dr. Steve Burian, a professor from the University of Utah, delivered a presentation on the application of advanced modeling techniques for groundwater management. He emphasized the need for a robust and reliable modeling framework to support decision-making in groundwater management. Dr. Burian also highlighted the importance of stakeholder engagement and participation in the groundwater management process. The workshop also included a field visit to a nearby groundwater well, where participants learned about the local hydrogeology and groundwater management practices. The visit provided an opportunity for participants to observe the application of groundwater management principles in a real-world setting. The five-day workshop was a collaborative effort between the University of Utah and the Water Center at MUET. The event was supported by the U.S. Agency for International Development (USAID) and the Higher Education Commission (HEC) of Pakistan. The workshop outcomes will contribute to the development of a national groundwater management strategy for Pakistan. The USPCAS-W MUET has been actively engaged in promoting water security and sustainability in Pakistan. The center has been working closely with the government, academia, and industry to develop innovative solutions for water management challenges.
